Find a right spot to fix a painting

Acquiring a palatial house is not a big deal these days. Decking it up with art works also does not require any aesthetic knowledge. However, maintenance of art works is an art.

Numerous environmental factors may accelerate the process of deterioration of an art work such as too much or too little heat, humidity, or light; pests; and pollution.

Neglect and ill-practised conservation techniques add to the decay. Earthen colours can tolerate sunlight better than chemical colours.

“Even the place of hanging a painting assumes significance in terms of exposure to sunlight and humidity. Care should be taken not to keep the painting close to bathrooms or wash areas. Closed areas will increase humidity and encourage mildew growth on the canvas. Excessive sunlight too might result in faster ageing of the painting by draining out the colours,” Mr. Goud says.

Placement of the painting has resonance in other aspects too. Generally, the areas to avoid are balconies, behind the doors, utilitarian areas such as shelves and corridors and smoke-generating spots such as kitchens, smoking hubs and fire places. Even a picture light fixed with the innocuous intention of enhancing the aesthetic value may damage a painting by generating excessive heat.

After placement comes the cleaning part. While all paintings can be cleaned of the surface dust with a soft brush, an acrylic painting can also be carefully wiped with a well-drained-out cotton swab.

Preferably, the cotton should be dampened with distilled water and rolled slightly on the surface of the painting. However, the surface should be rendered absolutely dry.
