Ideal gym: A home gym is worthwhile only when one is well informed about how to use the equipment and avoid injuries.

Nuclear threat faced by the world fades out when juxtaposed with the individual anxiety about the growing calories around one’s tummy. It is another matter that the calories as well as the anxiety have more to do with the dynamics of market economy than the health aspects associated with them.

However, it is an indisputable fact that the accumulation of apple-fat near the abdomen accelerates not only the ageing look, but also the onset of cardio-vascular diseases.

Ideal gym

The growing health awareness is driving more and more anxious people towards fitness centres. However, for people who can afford, having a personal gym within the limits of home is a much better option.

A treadmill or a static cycle at home will do for those aiming at general wellbeing, while a few more gadgets are at disposal of people coveting an enviable shape. A treadmill or a static cycle, in combination with an Ab Trainer and a few gadgets such as dumbbells, up-slider, and push-up bars will make an ideal gym.

A wide variety is available in the equipment.

“A Dual Action Fan Bike provides exercise to the whole body,” says B. Srikanth, sales coordinator with Stay Fit Fitness Accessories. Priced at Rs.8,500, the bike is designed to facilitate the automatic movement of the handle bars when pedalled. The bars can be relocated into different slots to render them static when needed. The range of bikes begins at Rs.4,000 and goes up as the features are added. LCD display of speed, time, distance and calories, adjustable seat, resistance control knob, and user weight options are a few features to facilitate choice. Also available are power bikes that move the pedals automatically.

Wide range

Treadmills are offered in about fifteen different combinations, divided broadly into manual and motorised. The manual one has information about time, speed, distance, calories, pulse rate, and also of Body Mass Index and room temperature.

The incliners in these have to be adjusted manually.

The price range of a motorised treadmill begins from Rs. 25,000 and goes up depending on the horsepower of the motor, user’s body weight and the other features. If one is affluent enough to spend up to Rs.2 lakh, one can expect luxury additions such as television, DVD player, fan, or A/C. Slots for water bottle and mobile phone are bonus gains.

An advanced Ab Trainer, as a choice, is available for Rs.6,500 for training lower and upper stomach muscles and toning the legs.

It offers six levels of training through an arching handle bar and an adjustable seat.

“In addition, a set of dumbbells and a figure twister will make up for a personal gym. It can be supplemented by an Ab slider that will keep the abdomen and the waist in shape,” says Srikanth.

Alternative

As an alternative to all the equipment, he suggests a Home Gym available at Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000. It will provide wholesome exercise to all muscles by allowing 27 different kinds of exercises.

A Home Gym will be an ideal choice where there is a space crunch.

A set of plastic push-up bars available at Rs.450 will not add up much to the investment while having a weighing machine and exercise mats for Yoga is optional.

Space allocation for a personal gym varies upon the number of gadgets one would like to have and also the number of people exercising at a given point of time.

A standard size of 10 x 12 feet should do for a usual set up.

The room, however, should be well ventilated to avoid the stuffiness associated with prolonged exercising.

Another point to remember before going for a personal gym is that it is always advisable for a new entrant to exercise under a trainer. A home gym is worthwhile only when one is well informed about how to use the equipment and avoid injuries.

Stay Fit presently having a stall at the All India Industrial Exhibition, offers exhibition discounts and free home delivery within the city limits. A fitness magazine will be delivered free of cost for one year from the date of purchase.
