In vogue: Ceramic flooring is catching up in the city.

A tiled floor adds character to the room. The most sought after option after stone, tiles have long been an integral part of construction. With innumerable options available in the market, finding the perfect tile with exact shape, colour and price is easier. To sum it all, there are five types of tiles available in the market and each one is noted for its specific use.

To start off, ceramic tiles top the list when it comes to choice. Ceramic tiles are hard and brittle in nature. Tiles are also known to be heat and corrosion resistant in the long run. Priced at Rs.42 to Rs. 67 per square feet (sft), they come with highlighted colours and designs. These tiles come in various finishes like the anti skid and mat finish, which are used on steps and in bathrooms. Also, one has to remember that floor tiles come in squares and wall tiles are mostly rectangular.

Moreover, a range of designer ceramic tiles come in wooden finishing thus giving the floor a wooden appearance. Also, tiles with highlighted pebbles give them a setup a glossy look are available at Home Town, for Rs.315 per piece.

“These tiles are designed to add personality to the room. For instance a designer tile with glass pebbles if highlighted with a lamp, will make the room look exotic,” says B.J. Kalyan Chakravarthy, an architect with a private firm.

Next on the list is the Vitrified tile. These tiles are nonporous and do not absorb any water like the conventional tile. The tile is known for its glazed look and a classic shine and is mostly being used in offices and commercial buildings. Vitrified tiles cost between Rs.49 and Rs.93 for a 2ft by 2ft tile. The tile is available in colours such as Pearl grey, Jet black and Oracle Jaisalmer to name a few.

On the other hand, if one is looking for the conventional yet glossy look, glass mosaic tiles are the best option. These tiles have multicoloured block in them with a glass finish that makes them shine. Mostly used in kitchens, swimming pools, wash rooms and pooja rooms, the tiles are priced at Rs.163 per sft.

“Glass mosaic tiles have to be placed carefully if one is mixing and matching them. Moreover, with the availability of designs, one has a number of options to choose from depending on the place where they intend to fix these tiles”, says Unit Head, Home Town, Venu G. Vedula.

Hand made tiles are a perfect example of ‘art-meets-construction’. Some of the hand made tiles are glossy. For instance, hand made roof tiles and arches range from Rs.263 to Rs. 288 per sft. Most of the hand made tiles are used for the exterior parts of the building like walls, steps and elevations.

Another use for tiles in contemporary buildings comes in the form of the mosaic name plate. Alphabets made in mosaic tiles are available for Rs.40 each. More over, mosaic tiles come in a variety of different pieces that cost Rs.50 a piece.

Unlike marble, tiles are pre-polished and are ready to use apart from being low on maintenance. “Most people use acid to clean tiles which is wrong. A range of cleaning solutions is available in the market especially for tiles”, says a dealer. From the halls to the bathrooms, from steps, walls to the swimming pools, tiles are multipurpose.
