Light up your life

Providing the right lighting is important, not just to make a building impressive, but also for your health, writes SWAHILYA

Light, while playing with shadows, can change the way a building looks. Providing the right amount of lighting is important, not just to make a building impressive, but also in terms of health.

“Our body works on a sun clock from the time we wake up and go to sleep at night. Though artificial light cannot give the same energy as the sun, it can prevent medical complaints such as migraine,” says Akash Mehta, Chief Operating Officer, Materials Management of Light Art.

The store in Chennai which stocks international light brands has caught the attention of people with its novel advertisement of the big electric bulb shining atop the city’s billboards.

Mr. Akash’s lament is that people in Chennai do not spend so much on lighting a building as they do in Mumbai. “Spending Rs. 200 per sq.ft. on lighting gives the building a thoroughly different look, making it a landmark,” he said.

Wide range

Chennai is the latest venture of Light Art which is based at Singapore’s Light Craft and has franchisee centres in Malaysia, Bangkok and Mumbai. It has lamps, shades and light panels catering for the lower, middle and the higher end project sections with latest trends and designs in LED, cold cathode, fluorescent and green lighting with a focus on energy.

Their lighting designer, Kapil Sinai Surlarkar of Goa, won The Paul Waterbury Award for Outdoor Lighting given by the Illumination Engineering Society of North America for the year 2007. The winning project was the Akshardham Temple in New Delhi. Though the temple is of a monotonous brown colour, the play of light and shadows gives it an exquisite look, highlighting the panels and pillars.

Feast for eyes

Of course the price of many international brands runs into lakhs of rupees, but it is a feast to watch the Barovier and Toso, the slender and minimalist Artemide, EYE LEDs, LUXIT, Vibis, moodlighting panels that are almost like abstract paintings with concept lights, bamboo stick lights of Viabizzuno, soft lights hidden inside crushed silk shades, and the crystal lights of Swarovski.

There are a whole range of lighting stores in Chennai’s Teynampet which continue to cater to the increasing chandelier and lampshade demand of the city. “With an increasing disposable income that couples have at hand, they are willing to spend that little bit more on beautifying their homes,” said a buyer at Creative Lights.
