Dual Monitor Setup for home computer

Handling multiple applications that demand attention at the same time can be a pain, therefore having two screens on the desk can decrease work load, says Abhijit Dev Kumar

Multi-tasking is the mantra in this fast paced wired world. Making power point presentations and chatting with your friends spells switching from one window to the other, which is time consuming.

This is where the dual monitor setup comes in handy.

Two is company.

The saying goes absolutely right when it comes to plugging in two screens to your computer.

Handling multiple applications that demand attention at the same time can be a pain, therefore having two screens on the desk can decrease work load.

Though the setup takes up space, it is advisable to use flat panel displays rather than conventional CRT monitors. The main idea is to save time and if you are viewing pictures that you have dumped on the comp, you can browse thumbnails on one screen and view them full screen on the second one.

Connection aspect

To connect an additional monitor to your computer, you need to have an extra video slot, i.e. look for two Video Graphics Array connectors (VGA) or two Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI). If the tower houses a single VGA or DVI connector, the hardware needs to be upgraded to a video adaptor that has two DVI or VGA connections. Moreover, if one is not familiar with insides of the tower, then it is better to get help from a systems engineer.

To configure the dual display, connect the second monitor in the additional VGA or DVI port and start the computer. After booting, the system will detect the new monitor.

Easy to load

All you have to do is to go to the control panel, click on the display icon, get into the ‘settings’ menu and click on the block with the number 2 on it. Once selected, click on the box that says ‘extend my windows desktop onto this monitor’.

Apply the settings and restart the computer. Moreover, one can drag the screens on the settings menu to use the monitors according to their placement on the table.

“The setup makes things easy for those who are continuously working on multiple applications, or software’s that have a number of tools and other related options. For instance, if one is working on video editing software, it becomes easy to place the timeline in one screen and tools in the other”, explains K. Ajay, who at present, is learning to edit videos.

At home or at work, having a dual monitor setup definitely saves a lot of time and increases productivity. Moreover, with most people working from home, the setup is a blessing to work on.
