Space availability is vital for any audio equipment, writes Abhijit Dev Kumar

Desired effect: Right choice of speakers plus proper placing a must for best output.

The boom box that transforms your home PC into a multimedia station can make all the difference to home computing experience. Many home computers face space restraints when it comes to choosing the right speakers that promise to give the desired output. From cheapest ones in the market to high-end lifestyle speakers, Wired Homes takes a quick look at speakers for the home computer.

Before buying the audio equipment, one should keep the space in mind .The concept of ‘Surround Sound’ has brought in additional features to contemporary speakers that includes a woofer- a sound box that takes care of bass. One such variety of speakers Creative 5.1 which is now available for Rs.3, 800, floored PC users for its superb audio quality. Placing these speakers around the home computer can be quite a task. “It’s better to select a speaker keeping space in mind. At home, we tend to keep unnecessary things on the table, and it is important that the speakers should be placed away from the monitor, as electromagnetic materials beside the monitor can cause distortion and colour imbalance”, says Kishore Kumar, a techie.

Low-end speakers from Intex and Frontech are available in the market that range from Rs.300 to Rs.500; promising a decent output. “They can take in rough usage and can be placed anywhere. Space is not an issue. The audio output is good, but it tends to crack up after the warranty period”, says Nicky K., a gaming enthusiast. Another one that promises superior clarity after Creative is Altech Lansing. But if you are looking for the small-yet-powerful speakers and don’t mind shelling out a few extra bucks, then Bose is the right thing for you.

The top runner in line is Bose Companion 5 Multimedia Speaker System which costs Rs. 24,638. The system comes with two speakers mounted on stands and a woofer including a sleek control pod that responds to the slightest touch. Others from Bose stable are Companion Series 2 and 3 that cost Rs. 7,763 and Rs. 16, 763 respectively.
