Levy on construction of luxury homes
The Kerala Government plans to impose a levy on the construction of luxury homes to support social housing schemes for the poorer sections of society, said Housing Minister Benoy Viswam. At a function held on the first death anniversary of British-born architect Laurie Baker, Mr. Viswam said the Government would soon bring a legislation in this regard.
The idea was that those building high cost homes should contribute a certain portion of their construction expenses to support State-sponsored housing projects for the poor, he said.
Ambitious scheme
The Government had drawn up an “ambitious” scheme to renovate the “one lakh housing scheme” being implemented for underprivileged sections since the 1970s, he said. Kerala should take it as an honour that Baker chose the State as his home, where he integrated his low-cost housing concept with the “basic needs of the poor and peculiarities of the environment.”
