Enchanting ‘Blue’ options

You want to be rid of wires all over your PC? Well, go for the hassle-free mouse, keyboard, writes Abhijit Dev Kumar

The whole computer setup only looks neat from the front. But an equally appalling mess exists with wires jutting out from behind the PC. Getting rid of the disarray can be quite a task. And this can be solved, to an extent though, by wireless keyboards and mice.

Connectivity of the computer has been enhanced with Bluetooth and wireless technologies. These come as a boon where home and office computing is involved. Wireless keyboards use infrared sensors to transmit signals from keyboard to the computer, allowing the user to sit back, sink into an armchair and work from a greater distance compared to wired keyboards.

Using a wireless setup makes more space on the table and one need not worry about wires.

One wireless keyboard and mouse combo is available in the market for Rs.1,300. “Wireless is a good option for those who do not have space restraint and prefer to work at a distance from the computer.

But there should be no interference between the wireless receiver and keyboard”, says T. Manish of R.S. Computers

Batteries

The set comes with a sensor, a wireless keyboard and an optical mouse.

The keyboard uses two AAA size batteries and the mouse has a slot for two AA batteries.

Both keyboard and mouse are paired to the PC as soon as the sensor is connected to the computer.

One can sit anywhere within six feet of the sensor, provided there is no interruption in the line of sight of the sensor, otherwise the connectivity will be lost.

Bluetooth key boards and mice for instance, have a longer range; there is no concept of obstruction while using a Bluetooth keyboard.

The computer uses a Bluetooth dongle so that keyboards and mice can be paired to it.

Apart from them, Bluetooth allows other hardware like mobile phones to be paired simultaneously, enabling the computer to handle multiple tasks.

Rechargeable

“Both wireless and Bluetooth keyboards and mice require batteries that should be changed from time to time, to avoid disruption during work. Therefore it is better to use rechargeable batteries for both of them.

Most of the time, Bluetooth comes with software, that allows five other Bluetooth enabled devices to pair with the computer”, says K. Kumar, a techie.

With both of them available in the market, traders say that most homeusers prefer wireless to Bluetooth as wireless is more cheaper and Bluetooth is priced at Rs. 6,000 approximately.
