Reinterpreting tradition: Plan, front view, outer court, inner court of a house in Mylapore.
Imagine you have a tight linear plot in Mylapore, a limited budget to build a new house and an abundant desire to recreate the qualities of a traditional house that is contemporary in appearance. To some the wish list may appear long and unreasonable. Not really, say the three young architects Balasubramanian, Elum Periyar and Manikandan of The Madras Design Works. Such wishes and requirements are not impossible to meet. They are challenging but that is the context within which we need to work, they feel.
The house in front of the Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple was completed a few months back for an elderly couple. The plot has a narrow front and is 90 feet deep. Within this, we have tried to reinterpret the courtyard based planning by strategically placing four courts along the length of the house, says Bala. We have also taken care to locate the sacred plants of the inner court as they were before. The total built up area of this two-in-one house is 3800 sq.ft. There are two identical three bed-room houses stacked one over the other with balconies and terrace. The balconies allow the inhabitants to participate in the various activities that go on at the street, say the architects. The final costs of the house are being reassessed, but we can assure you it is certainly a budget house, say the visibly satisfied architects.
