Store it easy in hardware

The trick is to keep data on external drives, writes Abhijit Dev Kumar

Storage devices have indeed come a long way. From floppies to the latest external hard-drives, information is now being stored in the latest hardware available in the market. But they end up cluttering the available space, gathering dust and eventually paint a ‘not-so-good picture’, especially at home.

“I have two big shelves of DVDs and CDs that have been piling up since five years”, says D. Rahul, a gaming enthusiast. The trick is to keep data on external drives, which consume less space and are easy to use. “With hardware prices falling steadily over the months, it is better to transfer all information on these external drives, thereby making them more accessible”, he adds.

Moreover, these devices come under the ‘plug and play’ category. “I used an old 80 GB Parallel ATA drive and converted into an external disc, which was enclosed within a casing and used a power source. The setup cost me Rs. 450,” says Nagmesh Kumar, a computer buff. These conversions are done at Chenoy Trade Centre at Park Lane but with prices of USB drives coming down, traders say people are opting for USB drives rather than getting hard drives converted. For starters, a four GB drive costs Rs.700, eight GB for Rs.1,400 and a 16 GB drive for Rs.2,700. Information from external drives can be dumped onto the computer and then formatted.
