This is with reference to the article titled ‘Prevent Those Pesky Predators’ published in these columns on April 19.

All the products (Phorate, Carbofuran, Zinc Phosphide and Aluminium Phosphide) mentioned in the article for use against rodents etc., are recommended mainly for agricultural use only and not for residential purposes. These chemicals are extremely toxi c and in fact, Celphos (or Aluminium Phosphide) is so toxic that it has to be used only trained operators licensed by Government of India. Nowhere in the article is it mentioned that products recommended are highly toxic and have to be used with great caution.

Since the article is aimed at owners of household gardens, it should have been particularly stressed that the products are extremely dangerous to human too and that adequate precautions should be taken regarding their use, handling, storage, disposal of container/pack etc.

These products are to be used only as a last resort when other measures of control fail. It is also pertinent to mention that the doses recommended are enough to kill armies of rodents and not just one or two which is the usual number found in household gardens.
