Customer-friendly: An exhibition of construction materials will be organised in the city. Coimbatore Corporation has initiated an Auto DCR project for building plan approvals. Skill development is what three associations of construction professionals are focussing on.
About 500 professionals related to the construction sector and belonging to three associations have joined hands in Coimbatore. The local chapters of the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), Builders Association of India and Indian Institute of Architects have formed the AEB Forum to take up common projects and to work together for the benefit of the sector and consumers.
Representatives of the associations spoke to The Property Plus on some of their major projects:
Auto DCR
This is a joint initiative of the three associations with the Coimbatore Corporation. The associations have sponsored the development of a state-of-the-art software for fast track approval of building plans.
Once introduced, the system will ensure that the approval process is completed at the earliest.
The software will be used by the members of these associations while drafting the building plan to ensure that it confines to the building rules.
When the plan is submitted to the Corporation, the local body will also use the software to see the plan abides by the rules.
This will bring about common interpretation of the rules and minimise the manpower needs to verify the plans.
Coimbatore will be next only to Pune in the country to have such a facility.
BUILDMAT 2009
An exhibition of construction materials will be organised in Coimbatore from January 23 to 26 next year.
This will bring under one roof the material manufacturers, technology providers, machinery and equipment manufacturers, housing and infrastructure developers and the service providers.
The expo will have 500 stalls, including 300 air-conditioned ones, and will be an international event.
Seminars and workshops will be organised on all the four days on contemporary topics in architecture, environment, urban design, structural and civil engineering, construction technology and project management.
The theme for the fair will be “Construction for Sustainable Development for All.”
Visitors were expected from different parts of the country.
Training
The associations are already conducting various training programmes for the workforce in the sector and civil engineering students.
These included the field oriented course for undergraduate civil engineering students and the Construction Training and Upgradation Programme.
These are conducted by the associations jointly with the educational institutions.
The representatives pointed out that one of the main focus of the industry now was skill development.
Productivity was greatly affected now and it was imperative to train the workforce in all areas related to construction. By pooling in resources and expertise jointly, the associations will work collectively on these programmes.
Contract form
Another proposal mooted by the forum is a standardised contract form, which will benefit the customers.
Thus, the AEB Forum will provide an opportunity to address the issues of concern and importance to the sector collectively and also complement the efforts of various professions for the common benefit.
With various major projects on the anvil in Coimbatore, these organisations expect the construction sector here to continue to do well. The forum will help improve the standards in the industry and meet the challenges and opportunities that come with the boom in the sector.
