In league of its own

A s far as fruits go, the papaya is in a league of its own, considering its excellent nutritive value and the widespread health benefits it confers.

Rich in vitamin A, betacarotene and vitamin C, papayas can contribute to excellent skin and eyesight.

An unripe green papaya may be used as a vegetable, though the unripe fruit does not contain carotene.

The fruit is said to aid digestion, which is why the practice of cooking meat with raw papaya evolved.

Do not consume papaya seeds, as it can create toxic effects in some persons.

The latex that oozes out when you harvest the fruit from the tree may also cause allergy in some people.

Here is how you can grow a papaya at home. Grow it in a patch of soil that is exposed to bright sunlight. You can grow the tree adjacent to your compound walls. The tree has soft roots and will not damage the building’s foundations.

The tree has a lifetime of over 6 years. It is a fast growing tree, and will yield fruits within a year.

What’s more, the fruits are available almost through the year. The tree needs good amounts of water - about 2 litres a day. Papaya trees are best propagated from cuttings or from seeds, which should be washed first to remove the gelatinous layer over them.
