The LCD and plasma televisions are perfect in picture resolution with quality audio output, says Abhijit Dev Kumar

Sleek and smart: Core features of LCDs and plasma televisions include higher contrast and resolution.
Television, over the years has become subject to aesthetics like any other source of entertainment like say, mobile phones, computers and audio players. Until 1980’s TV’s were placed inside good, old wooden boxes with foldable doors which slid sideways to reveal the screen. But today, the dramatisation has been cut short. Thin, sleek plasma and liquid crystal display (LCD) have replaced the conventional ‘idiot boxes’ to suit contemporary interiors.
Considered as the ‘in’ thing in contemporary interior designing, these television sets not only are being sold for their high quality video output, but for the aesthetic value they brings. These television sets are definitely for those who lean more towards the indulgent side of life.
The screen size of these televisions ranges from 19 inches and goes up to 52 inches. Most of the television sets that are increasingly being sold are within the 27-inch to 32-inch bracket. The TVs start from Rs.16, 990 for a 19-inch and go up to a cool Rs.4.5 lakh for a 52-inch screen.
Core features of LCD’s and plasma include higher contrast ration and resolution. Moreover, these TVs come in two variants- high definition (HD) ready and full high definition. The full HD comes with an approximate resolution of 1920 x 1080 where as HD ready is of 1366 x 768 resolution.
Analog signals
“Most of the programmes that are being aired on television channels are transmitted through analog signals. High definition programmes come in digital formats, which is a rare thing even in some of the developed countries. It will take another two to three years before Indian viewers will be able to watch a few high definition channels”, says Mohammed Thahar, Department Manager of consumer durables and electronics at Home Town.
Over ten big television manufacturers such as LG, Sony, Phillips, Samsung and BPL have forayed into the high-end segment, boasting of a rise in sales especially in the 26-inch television sets.
“There has been an increase in demand for these high-end television’s, attributing sales to young professionals who like to own everything that is trendy”, adds Thahar.
Light weight
Amrita Chaudhary, an employee of De Shaw at Hyderabad recently bought a Samsung LCD and is very happy with it. “I like its features. The sleek design gives the room a contemporary touch.
One good thing about these TVs is, they are very light when compared to the box sets and one can attach their computer to them”, says Amrita.
When it comes to audio clarity, the output ranges from 80 watts to 120 watts and for those who have huge halls, attaching a home theatre system to the television is a must.
Moreover, a distance of six to eight feet is required to view the television and a stabiliser is a must too.
