Something more for the wall
|
After paintings and cladding, walls now take display units that are an art by themselves.

Brick on the wall: Display units are the latest in wall furniture.
Awall is no more just a concrete divider. Nor is it simply planned for getting the right demarcations in a house or an office. Walls are devised and, to a large extent, imaginatively worked out to create spaces that become focus areas. Although showcases - stuck to the wall - have been old concepts in drawing rooms, it is the contemporary ideas in shape, size and material that redefines the theory of interior dcor. Now, `wall units' ring in an abundance of functionality, coupled with enhancing the space with aesthetic sensibility.
The modern versions of showcases in wood are in materials that stretch beyond one's imagination. The shapes are brought out by carpenters or imaginatively crafted with machined pieces. But the shape is designed by professional interior decorators with an eye on ergonomics. The ingenious design twists and curvatures and the rare material combo makes each one a piece de resistance. Now, would that explain the astronomical costs involved too?
These storage solutions from Italy are pieces of furniture composed of a series of individual units standing against a wall or room. Yet design must serve beyond its functional expectations and have the capacity to evoke human emotions and passions.
This is the essence explained in the latest collection of wall units from Presotto Italia, an Italian company, that has been manufacturing and exporting furnishing solutions for more than 50 years.
"Collezioni folies" are wall unit creations moulded from different high quality materials and fabrics where a simple object is transformed into a work of art, explains the product representative.
"The concept behind this collection is to create spaces that emphasise a spirit that has broken the conventional mould. The wall units combine the knowledge of the craftsman with the latest in modern technology, creating a final product that is contemporary, distinctly luxurious and hedonistic." Says the representative, "The inspiration behind the `Collezioni folies' collection, imported from Italy, was to create truly innovative living room furniture with a sophisticated look, while leaving large spaces for creativity open."
Variety of materials
From contemporary sideboards to full TV-media wall systems, the wall units consists of shelves and drawers in plywood, honeycomb panels, and compressed fibre boards for book and CD racks.
The Presotto wall units are available in several finishes - gold, silver leaf and nero frac lacquer. Nero frac is the Italian word for jet black.
"People with a taste for contemporary living and acute sense of style are our target audience and obviously people who can afford to spend for items that have been crafted from design to manufacture can go in for these," says the representative. This range is upmarket and is priced Rs. 150,000 onwards. There is no place for solid wood here, thereby making a bold statement on being environment-friendly.
Honeycomb panels will mean processed wood. The products do not cut down on green cover and are environment friendly to the extent of avoiding solid wood as far as possible, we hear.
