Papaya power
Among fruits, papaya is in a league of its own, considering its excellent nutritive value and the widespread health benefits it gives. Rich in vitamin A, betacarotene and vitamin C, papayas can contribute to excellent skin and eyesight.
An unripe green papaya may be used as a vegetable, though it does not contain carotene.
The fruit is said to aid digestion, which is why meat is cooked with raw papaya.
Do not consume papaya seeds, as it can create toxic effects in some persons. The latex that oozes out when you harvest the fruit from the tree may cause allergy. Grow the papaya tree in a patch of soil exposed to bright sunlight. You can grow the tree adjacent to your compound walls. The tree has soft roots and will not damage the building’s foundations.
It has a lifetime of over six years. It is a fast growing tree and will yield fruits within a year. What is more, the fruits are available almost through the year. The tree needs good amounts of water — about 2 litres a day. Papaya trees are best propagated from cuttings or from seeds, which should be washed first to remove the gelatinous layer over them.
