Audio solutions for theatre effect

Home theatre systems that were a rage have given way to high-end audio solutions, says Abhijit Dev Kumar

The science of sound which rules the universe has finally forayed into our living rooms. Entertainment is no longer limited to the visual impact and is incomplete without the sound itself. Over the years, home theatre systems that were a rage have given way to high-end audio solutions and it doesn’t get better than this.

When John Abraham was seen zooming on his bike in the movie ‘Dhoom’, the shot seemed surreal for viewers in the multiplex.

It seemed as though he had just zipped by from one end of the theatre to the other. Now that’s what you call an audio solution!

When home theatre systems hit the market it was a rage among the middle classes. “Get the theatre to your homes”- was the message that all electronics biggies wanted to drive home. Most of the systems came with a 5.1 channel output along with a woofer for the bass aspect of sound.

Advancing technology has made sure that ones olfactory senses are treated to mind blowing audio effects, literally surround sound in nature and a movie watch experience that is really worthwhile. This is what has come to be known as an audio solution.

Home theatre systems are categorised as per their channel output. The set comes with a DVD player, speakers and an added woofer.

The number of speakers range from two to seven in a set and some brands have two woofers on the offer. These sets are classified as 2.1- two speakers and a woofer to 7.1, that’s seven speakers and a woofer.

On the other hand, audio output for high-end audio solutions range from 3000 watts to over 20,000 watts. Each speaker in the audio solution has its own designated output and has to be placed in its designated spot in the room.

For instance, in a 5.1 set, one centre speaker, two rear and front speakers and a woofer are placed accordingly to do the job. Moreover, they come in sizes that are compact, wall mounted and even structured as towers.

“The best part about having an audio solution at home is that there is more audio clarity and the room comes alive with energy. The output is amazing even when it is connected to the television.

But while watching TV, the output comes from only two speakers, as TV output is not digital output”, says A. Madhukar, an owner of a Phillips system.

The system has a separate amplifier incorporated to adjust the sound levels for better clarity.

This feature comes in handy for music lovers who would like to listen to a particular instrument in a symphony.

“Surround sound effects are only applicable to audio solutions if the output is digitised and certified by international companies such as Dolby Digital or THX, if one were to view a copied DVD, the effect would not be the same when compared to the original one”, informs Mohammed Thahar, from Hometown.

Bose, Onkyo, Jamo, Yamaha, Elac and Sony are some of the companies that are manufacturing high-end audio systems and the price ranges from Rs.18,990 and goes up to a cool Rs.2.50 lakh.

Moreover, to get an optimum experience out of the audio solution, one has to go a step ahead and get sound proofing done to the room.
