Let there be a ray of light

For houses devoid of sunlight, one can hit the roof and go in for skylight, suggests T. Lalith Singh

Good option: Creative use of skylight will help you dispel darkness.

Dark and starved of illumination? Are your days too being spent in the glow of bulbs and tube lights?

Lack of planning at times does end up leaving a dwelling submerged in darkness and vainly screaming for some light from natural sources. The sun finds it hard to push its rays in and the occupants are left to spend their days and nights with switches on and electricity meter rolling on madly.

Bad planning

It could be due to bad planning or at times, practical considerations too. Given the scarcity of land, one finds houses and apartments rising with very little open spaces left between them for the windows to serve their purpose.

There are dwellings where one opens a window to end up staring at the wall of neighbouring house in close quarters.

Go for natural light

Either to usher in light from the sun or enhance whatever is available with the windows, one can hit the roof and go in for a skylight where it is feasible.

Have the sun smiling down its natural blessings straight through the roof and ensure that there is not only enough light seeping in and also ventilation of sorts.

The housing concepts of yore used to come with a courtyard which would ensure adequate lighting but present day living amid dearth of open spaces has almost done away with it. Thus one is forced to explore the possibility of dispelling darkness with those beams through the roof. This is possible much more easier if one has tiled roof.

Professional help

Get in touch with a qualified professional for advice on what suits best for your house, a given space in particular, and how to get this installed. One can opt for slanting, straight or dome shaped skylight based on the specifications. Do you need a window in the roof that is big enough to brighten up the place or should you go for smaller openings at different points to have the light filter in?

A good professional service will surely be able to provide a right choice.

Energy savers

The concepts of pipes and tubes that can be installed in niches or different points of choice too have already come into vogue elsewhere and such concepts will surely be tried out.

These act as good conduits for light and over a period act as a great energy savers and help you cut the electricity bills.

Apart from making the place brighter, these also impart certain aesthetic allure. One can turn creative with designs and make it part of overall look that a home has to offer.
