Made in Chennai

“It is satisfying to see the house as a labour of craft”

Craft in contemporary setting: The interior of Suresh and Vaishnavi’s house in Nungambakkam. (Clockwise from left) Study, living room, dining area and bedroom.

What distinguishes a better house from a good one is how well attention is paid to details.

It is no wonder that designers worship the details. When the users of the space also share this passion and eye for detail, the result is a richly endowed house, say Prerna and Sunil, two young architects of PSP Architects, Chennai. This is what happened when we did the interior of Suresh and Vaishnavi’s house in Nungambakkam, they add.

This 7,500-square-foot house has been crafted with handmade sand stone screens; contemporary cane furniture, granite panels and brass inlay works.

Along with Suresh and Vaishnavi, we sourced products and skills from countries as far as Indonesia and Thailand to create a classic and at the same time contemporary look for the house, they say.

Behind all these hand crafted works is the less visible and silent high-end technology backbone that runs the house.

A centralised touch screen panel takes care of the lighting; biometric locks controls access and variable refrigerant technology provide accurate cooling. The toughened glass replaces security bars, and solar heating and a reverse osmosis plant service the house.

“It is satisfying to see the house as a labour of craft. We consciously incorporate the abundant crafts and skills into our design.”

This is enriching in many ways say the visibly satisfied architects.
