Keeping pests at bay

Increasing awareness on health and hygiene are prompting people to go in for pest control measures, writes Anasuya Menon

Exterminators: A pest management group at work.

For most of the city dwellers, some of the world’s most despicable creatures live not in the jungles of Africa but, in own homes – inside the bookshelves, underneath the kitchen cabinets and in the moist corners of the bathroom.

Our ancestors probably learnt to live with the knowledge that entire generations of cockroaches and bugs might be flourishing in their storerooms or cupboards. But, now-a-days people have a choice. Pest management services are easily available, says Gayathri Chidambaram, Franchisee of Godrej Pest Management Services, Coimbatore. The increasing awareness on health and hygiene too are prompting people to go in for pest control methods, she says.

Though it took the concept years to reach India after it was first experimented with in the West, pest control has become an easy solution for a common problem now.

The Pest Control of India (PCI) offers solutions to all pest problems in commercial, industrial and residential segments, says V.E.Prasad, Branch Manager of PCI, Coimbatore. Pest control measures can be implemented right from the stage of construction of the building. Before setting the concrete, a layer of chemicals is applied, which acts as an impenetrable barrier for most insects, Mr. Prasad says. The same method is followed before laying the flooring too, he adds. The company offers a warranty of ten years for this method.

Insects

In case of insect problems in existing buildings, the officials identify the entry points of insects and apply chemicals. This method has a warranty of five years and has to be repeated once in three to four months. The officials, after inspecting the house and administering the chemicals, also offer suggestions on how to prevent insects from entering the house. “They also educate people on maintaining the house pest-free,” he adds. There is a need to be aware of the dangers of insects. A single cockroach egg can produce 10 to 20 offspring, he says. They multiply fast and can invade every area including refrigerators, water tanks and microwave ovens.

Chemicals

The chemicals used are manufactured by the PCI and approved by the World Health Organisation. The odour-less, non-allergic chemicals will cause no harm to human beings and pets too, he adds. The chemicals used by Godrej Pest Management Services are eco-friendly and perfectly safe for humans and pets, says Ms.Gayathri. She however advises tying up pets for a few hours after administering the chemicals. “It is an economical option too when compared to the expensive insect-repellents available in the market,” she says. Most insect-repellents are poisonous and do more harm than good, she points out.

These companies have separate packages for cockroaches, spiders, termite, beg bugs, rodents, silver fish, mosquitoes and wood boring insects. When the building is free of small insects, the number of lizards will automatically reduce.

According to pest management officials, more and more commercial establishments such as hotels, hospitals, banks, offices and educational institutions are making use of the services.

Three aspects

“If you deny entry, shelter, food, insects cannot multiply,” says Mr.Prasad. So, if the entry points such as bathrooms, kitchen sinks, and gas cylinders are properly cleaned or disinfected, insects will not come in. Also, remove food particles and dispose kitchen waste daily. If you allow them to accumulate, the insects will thrive in them, he adds.
