For your choice: A range of designer tiles at a showroom in Coimbatore.
The firewood fragrance, a copper drum gleaming dully, and built into a platform, a nose-tickling aroma of shikakai and other wonderful and unpronounceable unguents — these are the memories of the bathroom in my grand mom’s home. I can’t recollect a single ugly plastic mug or bucket defiling the vennir ullu as it was referred to. Oh yes, the floor. Rough hewn, in shades of grey and white, it could also be called the ex
foliator. When you rubbed your foot hard on it, it took care of the most stubborn dirt and dead skin, and left you with the prettiest pair of pink soles and heels in town. Also, as far as I can remember, none of the elder population ever broke a bone there.
I had promised myself that I would recreate the very same ambience when I had my own home. But a small bathroom in a flat doesn’t lend itself to copper and stone, or so I thought. Till I happened to see this range of tiles (at a ‘tile boutique’ if you please), that combined the charm and hardiness that would have done even my pati’s nonpareil bathroom proud.
The range of tiles is mind-boggling. Forget a bathroom in a flat. Even if you chose to retile Buckingham Palace, there would still be designs left over. Sasi Kumar Nair of Bath’N’Style says there are over 5,000 designs to pick from. As your eyes take in the incredible colours, motifs, textures and designs, Nair assures you that no matter how small or big the bathroom, it could be transformed into a perfect getaway.
You could be Cleopatra, and there are tiles to win you over. In fact there is a wall panel complete with hieroglyphics, pharaohs and Nubian slaves, if your tastes run to Egyptian splendour.
To help make up your mind, Sasi Kumar explains exactly how you could go about choosing the tiles. There are ready-to-lay ones. These are pre-determined combinations, that you just pick out and use. To help you along, there are panels on display that will give you a very good idea as to how your bathroom wall will look once done. They could vary from black and white combos (very popular, says Nair) to splashes of cheery colours and motifs for the kids’ bathrooms, or muted, earthy hues, and so on.
Then there is the mix and match you could do yourself. That lets you be as creative, funky, elegant or cheerful as you want to be in your bathroom décor. And finally there is an option where you demand your requirement and it is created for you. This could be a lot of fun, as we saw some tiles that were replicas of a scrabble board, a chess board, a snakes and ladder board and so on. (Perfect for the children’s room, but if you like chess or scrabble in your bathroom, well then, what are you waiting for?)
Italian, Spanish, Brazillian, Chinese…there are tiles from all over the world. Of course, the Italians steal the show. Some antique finish stone tiles take your breath away. In warm Mediterranean hues and textures they could really create a mood. Stone, wood, steel, and yes, even platinum, gold and silver are used in some of the tiles. Crystal, river glass pebbles, hand painted motifs…the luxury line is breathtaking. And, there is something for every pocket and every taste.
Once you have decided to buy the tiles at Bath ‘N’Style, they provide you with a value added service of helping you choose your tile, designing your bathroom and even providing site supervision, so the laying of the tile is done perfectly.
Recapturing Pati’s vennir ullu magic would be priceless, but for every other great bathroom options go to Bath ‘N’ Style on Bharathi Park Main Road, Sai Baba colony.
