Saviour of our times:In case of a power cut, the UPS should be able to sustain the system.
Having sufficient backup for the PC is as important as having a stabilizer for the television and a good UPS with sufficient support time is the ideal way to ensure proper shutting down of the PC.
There were times when one used to run the computer without a power backup source and in case of a power cut, the PC would go blank without a moment’s pause.
The UPS came as a boon to improper shutting down and gave the user a few more minutes of power so that the computer could be shut down comfortably.
“One should choose a UPS that provides a decent amount of backup time. In case there is a power cut, it should be able to sustain the system till one closes all the running programs and then shut down the system. Gamers and animators especially need a UPS that gives ample support so that the heavy applications can be exited and closed properly”, says N. Kumar, a graphics artist.
A plethora of options is at the feet of the consumer when it comes to using a UPS. Right from the lower-end models to the higher-end ones, they come with a stipulated backup time which obviously determines their pricing.
Local brands
Local brands start from Rs.1,450 and go up to Rs.1,500, where products such as Microtek, Powercom and Wep, which are in the mid-pricing category, range from Rs.1,800 to Rs.1,900.
Backup time ranges from eight to twenty minutes, depending on the monitor that one is using. “If a 17 inch CRT monitor is being used, then the UPS can support the system anywhere from eight to ten minutes. But if one is using a 15 inch CRT monitor, then they can be assured of a backup time that ranges from 18 to 20 minutes”, says Manish Taluka of R.S. Computers.
“But if one is using a TFT screen, then backup time may increase as TFTs are known to consume less power”, he adds. All the UPS come with a two-year warranty. If it ceases to work, then one must get the battery checked up as the latter weakens after a prolonged usage.
“It’s advisable to change the battery if the backup timing goes down after the given warranty period. ”, says a computer peripherals dealer at Chenoy Trade Centre, Secunderabad.
The batteries for UPS are available in the range of Rs.700 and Rs.750.
