The move towards new lighting systems is a breakaway from the nearly 50-year-old mould in Kerala. The appetite for new designs, better technology, more imaginative use of light and for creating the ambience suited to each occasion have all been whetted by the arrival of imported lights.
Easy channels of communication and cheaper transport have enabled designs and technologies in the lighting industry to travel across the globe quickly and in real time.
Importantly, some of the latest designs in the world are available right at our doorsteps, says an engineer in the city.
The price factor
The fact that these new designs are transmitted quickly means that lighting trends in Kerala could match those anywhere in the world. However, prices remain a major factor.
Industry sources indicated that superior light designs and technology still come from Europe, especially from countries like Italy. Cities like Bangalore and Chennai have several outlets that deal in imported lights from Europe.
Growing demand
Though Kerala does not have outlets dedicated fully to imported lights, the demand has continued to grow and it would not be too long before full-fledged outlets open up here.
It is expected that the new trends towards more improvised lighting and the growing demand for new technologies will fuel similar developments in Kerala.
China impact
While imported lighting systems from China continue to be in demand in Kerala, there is also swing towards more quality and higher technologies.
An impact of massive imports of lighting systems from China has been that it helped cool down the prices to a great extent, industry sources said here.
Chinese imports also opened up the demand for innovations in lighting systems and drew those with ability to spend more money on new technologies and designs.
Even in Kerala where lighting accessories appeared to remain unchanged for nearly five decades, the trend is obvious.
Imported lights are not only being favoured for their designs, said an engineer here. He said that people are now conscious of the new technologies.
Their environmental consciousness also plays a big role in choosing new lighting systems.
