Go for customised cabinets

Relish it: Durability factor along with aesthetics is a major consideration when it comes to a dining room

A home is not just a dwelling. It should also house all the stuff we may need for our comfortable living. From clothes to washing machine, shoes to toiletry, jewellery, food-stuff, books etc. So, ample storage space should be provided to accommodate all the materials we may need in our day-to-day life. Storage has to differ from room to room. The living room should have a showcase. The bedrooms will have wardrobes. Similarly, all the different rooms in a home should have t heir customised storage spaces.

A showcase is less of a storage space and more of an exhibition of your taste. Unlike the cupboards, the interiors of a showcase are exposed. So, great care should be taken to ensure that its interiors are also pleasing enough. You can either have a conventional showcase with cement shelves or even opt for a designer wooden piece.

While the former is cheaper, the latter is more contemporary and easy to install and move. Designer wooden showcases are available in a very wide range and all you have to do is just pick one for your home and get it installed. But you should be ready to shell out quite a few bucks extra.

On display

In case you prefer to have a conventional one, ready-made designs and sizes for the showcase are always available with the builder. But remember, you are supposed to provide space for what you want to display and not vice-versa. Visualise the design proposed by the builder and do not hesitate to suggest changes to suit your requirements.

A wardrobe is an absolute necessity in a bedroom.

Though designer wardrobes are very customised and elegant, the storage space they offer is very restricted. The one major drawback of ready made wardrobes is their height. Most of them do not rise beyond seven feet due to practical constraints like mobility and installation. Nearly three feet of unused space that is left above these wardrobes can be effectively utilised in a permanent cupboard made of cement shelves.

Though a depth of 20 inches to 22 inches would serve most of the purposes, it is always advisable to think and tailor the design to meet your needs. Appearance of the interiors is not a factor here.

Smooth concrete shelves finished with oil-based distemper would be apt. A dressing table can also be cleverly included into the wardrobe itself by providing a mirror on one of its doors.

Durability is a major consideration for the kitchen as these storage spaces are used more often and subject to wear and tear.

Modular kitchens are the best option if you can afford it. They make the best use of all the available space on the walls, below the platform etc. They are also water resistant and easy to maintain as they come with a service guarantee.

Apart from the above, you should also plan for a store room where literally anything can be strewn and retrieved for a later use. If there isn’t sufficient space for a separate store room, you can effectively use the unutilised spaces in your home.

The most appropriate places are above a low-roof toilet, above the lintels in the bedroom and unused corners in any part of your home.
