Home dressing, for all seasons

Want to know the emergence of retail furnishing in the country? Take a look at the assortment at Seasons Furnishing that’s attracting the high-end clientele, says RANJANI GOVIND

Want to know who has splashed the riot of colours for furnishing the heritage train Palace on Wheels? Or provided the premium fabrics for the film ‘Moulin Rouge’ that won the Oscars for Best Art Direction? Or would you guess who is handling the furnishing segment for the mega serials dished out from Balaji Telefilms?

The diminutive details that have grabbed the attention of millions have been dealt with by Seasons Furnishings, one of India’s identified brands that has just made an entry to the IT city Bangalore too, with ‘Seasons Club Class’ boutique that has an aesthetic display of end-to-end furnishings at Indiranagar. Seasons Club Class houses premium brands from across the world including Saum & Viebahn from Germany, Warwick and Prestigious from the U.K., Kobe from the Netherlands and Parzan from Turkey.

Says Mandeep S. Wadhwa, Managing Director, Seasons, “The boutique also offers top-of-the-line Seasons Collection and the spread itself is a model, throwing in samples of coordinated furnishing for the living room and the bedroom, allowing one all the space for relaxed choose and buy. How many would know about the fabric and colour symphony in curtain and sheer match? And how many can by themselves decide if a tie-back could help showcase a window decoration better or gather the grammar behind the interior harmony of placing a floor rug to bring in sophistication? We have a display for all this, and a style book that gives you quite a few samples of the idea. There are people too to help one zero in on all these.”

Seasons Club Class (with showrooms in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurgaon and Bangalore) has a range of about 700 assortments of fabrics, decoratives, accessories, rugs, bed covers, cushions and artefacts with a special spring-summer collection for 2008 called ‘Grounded Brights,’ that has furnishing and upholstery in bold designs with striped velvets, multi-coloured jacquards in traditional paisleys, ornamental leatherites and some neutrals in bold tones.

The boutique’s skilful merge of ‘black-and-white’ has come for a lot of appreciation.

“Seasons has a Kashmir Chinar Leaf as its logo, and this leaf changes colours during the four seasons and that’s exactly what we at the store follow too. Nothing is constant, just as fashion. We believe that our thoughts, ideas and colours introduced each season have to be one of its kind that adapts to the global trend. Our strength also lies with our professional designers at the home design studio from NID and NIFT who help us bring about 600 new designs every year,” explains Mandeep.

The company exports 50 per cent of its production to 20 countries and has provided furnishing solutions to some of the biggest international hotel chains including Bellagio, Harrah’s, Ritz Carlton, Rincon Suites, Fairmont Rio, Marriott and Shangri-La. On the domestic front, the Taj, Oberoi, ITC Group, Shangri-La, Claridges have a taste of Seasons apart from a host of celebrities who have the fabrics for their residences.

“Our family started with textile trading and my father Nanak Singh Wadhwa had 200 hand looms,” says Mandeep. “It was in 1988 that my brother Inderjeet Wadhwa took charge and brought in Italian machines that gave us all the classy colour hues. With a weft-and-warp gold mine in the family, we decided to start a retail boutique in Delhi in 1994. Today, we have manufacturing facilities at Noida and are expanding at Sonepat in Haryana with international parameters in safety.” With home furnishing being the fastest growing sector with 40 per cent rise every year, Mandeep says the irony is that 90 per cent of the happenings are in the unorganised sector. Thanks to the emergence of architects and interior designers with a nose for creative display, and the growing pockets cultivating a taste for interior flaunts, the industry has gained the required boost, feels Mandeep.
