Let it be an extension of your persona

Lend an extra dimension to your living room using accessories like mirrors positioned in vantage points, says S. Sandeep Kumar

Space and comfort: The best way of designing a particular space is simplicity in decoration.

As the saying goes, face is the index of mind and likewise a living room happens to be a true index of the taste, style and attitude of the owner. And this is the reason behind everyone laying special emphasis on designing and decorating their living rooms with a taste that reflects their self.

However, in the process of trying out different design styles and patterns and showcasing their special acquisitions to guests and visitors, most house owners ignore basic aspects in making a living room appear truly aesthetic and appealing. Accommodating luxurious furniture, cosy sofa sets and other accessories in the living room is always good but that needs to be done while ensuring that extra bit of space and comfort, says Vikram Gayakwer, a city-based interior designer.

The best way of designing this particular space of the home is to decorate it as simple as possible. Do not clutter the room with heavy furniture or more equipment than what gives an airy look. Making optimum use of natural elements such as sunlight, greenery and fresh air enhances the look of the house. Make sure windows are positioned at the north-east corner of the room as it enables flow of fresh air and sunlight for most part of the day, he suggests.

For houses that have less space in living rooms, placement of mirrors can make the room appear more spacious and wide. Similarly, for increasing the dimensions of a room, horizontal lines should be drawn on the sidewalls to make the room appear lengthier and vertical lines to give the illusion of height.

Before finalising on the type and style of furniture, one should learn that glass or metal furniture depict the present day patterns, while wood furniture always presents an antique appeal.

Always prefer warm colours like yellow, pink, orange on the sidewalls and white flooring as it reflects more light, advises Mr. Gayakwer. Using carpets on floors depends on an individual. Above all, a focal point, which can be a portrait, idol or even a photograph should be identified and highlighted using lights and colours.

Whatever design theme one selects, it forms a face of your living room and the same theme should follow with other aspects in order to keep a flow of visibility, he concludes.
