Powered philosophy: pause, press the switch
Times were when power distribution authorities hardly felt any need to implement energy conservation measures.
“The more we supply the more profits we can earn. Why should we take up energy conservation?” a top official remarked during summer when power consumption in the city was at its peak.
However, this does not remain the situation anymore. Unable to cater to the spiralling power needs of the city, the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited has deigned from its avowed position to make an appeal to the public to be frugal with power.
The measures suggested by the authorities for the home front include, utilisation of natural air and light instead of air-conditioners and electrical bulbs and tube lights, switching off the lights and fans when leaving the room, use of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and slim tube lights that consume less power than the filament lamps, use of pressure cookers instead of electrical cookers and appliances, judicious use of geysers and abstention from using heavy duty appliances during peak hours, i.e., 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
