Commercial paradise?: The sixth most populous city in the country inching its way to becoming a hub for retail market.
The twin cities have been known for their traditional markets. Laad Bazar, Chikkadpally, Sultan Bazar, Abids and MG Road have been the time-honoured markets so far. But the last decade saw a phenomenal growth in retail sector which spread out to other parts of the city and in a good measure to the outskirts like Kukatpally, Kushaiguda, Alwal and Dilsukhnagar areas.
The metamorphosis of the retail market into organised retail sale sector did not take long with malls springing up at different locations. No wonder, the sixth most populous city in the country is now inching its way to be recognised as a major hub for retail market in addition to emerging as a high-end metropolis .
The latest survey report by Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj (LLSM) titled ‘Leading High Streets of India – Embracing Change’ mapped three important arteries of the twin cities – Begumpet, Road No. 36 Jubilee Hills and Himayathnagar as the retail hubs of the twin cities. Here are the excerpts from the survey:
Begumpet
The unchallenged shopping street of downtown Hyderabad commands a dual city-wide consumer profile . The Begumpet hub has a fair comprehensive collection of High-Street and mall retailing, five-start hotels and offices, The brand mix comprised international and national brands, designer boutiques, bookshops, art shops, jewellers and traditional saree shops making it an attractive destination for international shoppers.
The area has well-known restaurants like Chutneys. Seventh Heaven, mantra Resto-bar and Café Odyssey. The long stretch of road has quite a few exquisite jewellery and pearl showrooms and also silk saree showrooms like Kala Kunj Saree Vatika, Meena Bazaar and Nalli Silk Sarees. More contemporary speciality and departmental stores like Kalaniketan wedding mall, Shopper’s Stop, Pantaloons, Babu Khan Mall and Life Style provide a wide range of retail offerings in addition to the Hyderabad Central.
Jubilee Hills
An upmarket residential area, it is a prime and upscale shopping street in close proximity to the CBD. This area is preferred by new age retailers, thus adding to its strong demand dynamics. Having the advantage of being located in prime residential area and still retaining the charm of a quiet and relaxed overall ambience, the demand and rents in the area have exhibited a consistent growth over the years.
The road stretch has risen to fame riding on its exclusive clientele that includes local film industry barons along with high networth individuals who reside in the neighbourhood. The stretch is popular among the new generation IT professionals thus generating enough footfalls, as it is the access road to Madhapur and Hitech City.
The High Street has attracted a number of national and international brands and more exclusive cafes and restaurants like My Café Latte, which is oriented towards cinema fans. With big stores like Reebok, Café Coffee Day and Food World Road No 36 it has developed as an upmarket vista for elites. The other attraction is the distinctive automotive showrooms of Mercedes Benz and the Honda Pride.
Himayathnagar
Hitherto an unassuming neighbourhood market, Himayatnagar has now emerged as a prominent High Street of Hyderabad and has attracted many national and international brands. The watershed of this market was in the first half of 1990s when lot of colleges, institutes and training centres were established in the area. A new brand of young customers was added to the already existing dense residential community of Basheerbagh, Narayanguda and Sultan Bazar around this high-street. Today footfalls are growing because of the presence of educational institutes and offices in some of the upper floors of the shopping arcades.
The prime attraction for youth in this area is the presence of eating joints and cafés including Almond House, Woodland Deluxe Restaurant, Hyderabad House, Pick and Move, Chutneys, Universal Bakers and Minerva Coffee House. The upcoming MPM mall is expected to further strengthen Himayathnagar’s placement in retail market.
