The APCPDCL appeals to public to be frugal with power consumption
|
Soft glow: Go for economical lighting which doesn’t drain your power bill.
Times were when power distribution authorities hardly felt any need to implement energy conservation measures.
“The more we supply the more profits we can earn. Why should we take up energy conservation?” a top official remarked during summer when power consumption in the city was at its peak.
However, this does not remain the situation anymore. Unable to cater to the spiralling power needs of the city, the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited has deigned from its avowed position to make an appeal to the public to be frugal with power. Providing a few tips on how to save energy in households, shops and industries, the company sought help from the public to tide over the power crisis that plagues the State now.
For home users
The measures suggested by the authorities for the home front include, utilisation of natural air and light instead of air-conditioners and electrical bulbs and tube lights, switching off the lights and fans when leaving the room, use of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and slim tube lights that consume less power than the filament lamps, use of pressure cookers instead of electrical cookers and appliances, judicious use of geysers and abstention from using heavy duty appliances during peak hours, i.e., 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Suggestions to commercial establishments include avoiding excessive illumination, decorative bulbs and neon sign boards, sparing use of elevators, and use of solar water heaters for the establishments apart from minimising the use of air-conditioners. Industries may use natural light and air to the maximum extent thereby reducing the use of power. Matching the motor capacity to actual requirement, switching off the machines when not in use, lubricating them at regular intervals while replacing the bearings promptly, placing the motor as close to the load points as possible, providing shunt capacitors across the motor terminals, and switching off all the unused lights and fans and also the machines during the lunch hours and shift change-over period were some more suggestions. Power consumption in the city hovers above 16 million units for the last few days as against the allocated 14.9 million units. It amounts to about 22 per cent of the total allocation for CPDCL.
