With ‘vaastu’ in vogue

Beautiful blend: Melbourne-based Australian architects Andrew Maynard and Mark Austin are upbeat about merging Indian taste with western designs. -

Contemporary styles with a dash of ethnic in modern edifices are in vogue. Modern architects, including the Western ones, these days try to strike a balance by blending the two aspects to suit the Indian buyer. One such ultra luxury residential community, developed by Radha Realty Corporation Private Limited on these lines, is coming up in a nine-acre land near Botanical Gardens at Madhapur.

Andrew Maynard, an architect from Australia, has provided designs to the residential community that will be completed by the end of 2009. Andrew Maynard Architects Company established in 2002 is a group of architects producing internationally recognised work at a time when architecture has never been so cool.

Andrew Maynard shares some of his thoughts behind his new project in Hyderabad and the challenges faced by foreign architects while designing for the ‘quintessential’ Indian customer with M. SRINIVAS How do you compare the Indian architectural designs with other countries?

It’s hard to describe likes and dislikes of people. Indians follow ‘vaastu’ while constructing their dream home and those staying in western countries prefer modern designs. Traditional designs are given more importance with Indians. In such a scenario, some of them now prefer ethnic designs with a touch of modernity.

What is the methodology adopted in understanding principles of ‘vaastu’ before designing the residential community in Hyderabad?

I did research in ‘vaastu’ with the help of information gathered from Internet. Though some information was contradictory compared to designs being implemented elsewhere in the world, I managed to develop a design that suits Hyderabadis with perfect ‘vaastu’.

The design provided to the upcoming residential community at Madhapur is receiving good response. Can you explain the emerging trends in architectural designs in Hyderabad?

“A client with a vision will produce visionary architecture”.

I observed that people investing in property want to build their houses with contemporary styles and perfect ‘vaastu’.

What are your future plans in Hyderabad?

With the real-estate booming and sector multiplying in leaps and bounds, I am planning to take up more such projects here. Plans have also been drawn up to open an office after getting a few projects.

Comment on Hyderabad and its real-estate scenario?

It’s great working in Hyderabad. I am looking at a city that is growing enormously . I want to do something different in terms of architectural designs.
