A market for branded and imported furniture

Branded and imported furniture have suddenly become a rage among the residents of cities.

People are keen to buy products from well-known and established companies in the field of fashion furniture these days.

“Quality assurance and after-sales service have made people prefer branded products,” says O. Arsel, managing partner of shop in Kozhikode.

“Most of them come with a warranty.”

In fact, many furnishing shops in the city have stopped merchandising products made of cheap timber.

One of the reasons is that shop owners do not want complaints about the goods from clients.

However, furniture made out of teak, rosewood and mahogany have takers among the city folks.

Changing profile

The changing profile of young buyers is another aspect that has forced the furniture showrooms to switch to branded products.

Now most shops exhibit elegant sofa sets, sofa-cum-beds, entertainment furniture, dinning tables, chairs, beds, besides cupboards, shoe racks, wardrobes, study tables, chairs, computer tables, cupboards, cabinets and pedestals of Indroyal, Damro, Zuari, Wipro, Springwel, Style Spa, Moebelix, Blowplast, Piyestra and Merry Fair. Television stands are priced in the range of Rs. 1,990 to Rs. 16,000; book shelves, Rs. 4,200 to Rs. 8,000; computer tables, Rs. 1750 to Rs. 6,250; wardrobes, Rs. 6,250 to Rs. 40,000; cots, Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 40,000; dinning tables, Rs. 12,400 to Rs. 75,000; dressing tables, Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 8,000; crockery set cupboard, Rs. 19,000 to Rs. 40,000; bedside tables, Rs. 1,900 to Rs. 4,000, chairs, Rs. 1,900 to Rs. 17,000 and accessories, Rs. 250 to Rs. 4,000.

“Most of these companies offer a diverse range of modern and traditional furniture. And they are manufactured using particleboards or medium-density fibreboards. Besides, the furniture can be dismantled and assembled,” he says.

A salesman of a Damro showroom city says that furniture prices have shot up in the last few months on account of the high pricing of raw materials. But the prices have not deterred customers from buying quality products.

Damro offers an assorted variety of contemporary and customary furniture.

It has a wide range of sofa sets and recliner suites, such as Glenfield, Flash, Irish, Glory, Brisbane and Emerald. These are priced from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 52,000.

Popular items

Sofa beds and wooden sofas are popular items from Damro. The bedroom suites include a dressing table, bed, wardrobe, dressing stool and bedside cupboard.

Style Spa, previously called Gautier India Ltd., has a complete range of furniture for bedroom, living room and dining room.

Simplicity

Salient features of its products are the “modular simplicity, legendary durability, thoughtful ergonomics, rich tones and silky smooth textures.”

Most of Style Spa furniture is made using particleboards or MDF boards.

These boards are mostly imported from Europe to ensure superior quality, the company says.

The boards are laminated, varnished and edge-sealed in the company factory. The furniture will last a lifetime so long as it is maintained well and not abused, the company says.

Imported webbing belts are used instead of springs in the sofas of Style Spa. These are used to provide required elasticity.

If springs are used, deformation takes places with constant use.

With elastic webbing, this will not happen, according to the company.

Accessories

Indroyal has a wide range of attractive and trendy accessories from design headboards, shelves, stands, footstools and essential space management cupboards in wood, metal, glass and other innovative materials.

Wipro has come out with different products to suit the tastes of young customers. Its Yuva-bubble, a model, is a trendy and designer chair. It has ribs for extra strength, strong under structure in chrome.

Another model, Yuva rush, is a sleek and stylish chair, having a fully supported seat. It has no sharp edges and finished in chrome.

Zuari products from the stables of the K.K. Birla Group are available at affordable prices.

Its furniture, made out of European raw material, is fire-, termite- and fungus-resistant. Some of the furniture are finished in beech and teak. Apart from conventional products, the company brings out readymade utility furniture. Some of these are kitchen side boards, thin shoe racks, two-tier racks with seat, strip centre table, corner stands, diamond side tables, centre tables with round top, telephone stands, corner display units, speaker-cum-telephone stands, two-door shoe racks and centre tables.
