For parties out of the public gaze

Finding space to entertain a large number of guests can prove frustrating in city homes and apartments.

UNWINDING ZONE: Rooftops can be developed into party areas.
Home signifies comfort. Keeping this in mind, people build their homes with enthusiasm and care. But, even with an eye to detail, some things escape the mind — for instance, providing a private party area.
Usually, houses have front doors opening into lawns and driveways. But many who like to party in the lawn prefer to have it out of the public gaze. Pravin Gopalan, an engineer who practises architecture, says, “We can look for such a space if we
have at least 10 cents of land.”
His idea is to open the dining area into the lawn for enough private space for a small get-together at home without calling attention towards the front of the house. “One can have a small pond and a barbeque space too in this place,” he says.
Craze
Such a private area is becoming a craze among the new generation. As the party culture has caught on, many houses are redesigned to provide such a space.
Jose K. Mathew, architect in Kottayam, has provided a party space on the first floor of a house.
A small side terrace from the hall on the first floor leads to the party area for small get-togethers. The entire hall on the first floor can be opened to the party area, overlooking a pond that wedges into the ground floor.
Party areas in flats are commonplace with the roof turning out to be a good option. Everyone is familiar with the area.
Flat dwellers at one Good Earth complex find that the grounds give them enough partying space with enough privacy.
Rooftops are private spaces that anyone in the flat can use for a party, says a flat owner. They give you enough privacy without disturbing others and without much cost, he adds. Sometimes, the ground floor of a flat in a corner serves as a small private-public party space without causing much inconvenience to anybody.
