East and West: A rich blend of traditional and contemporary on display.
It’s back. For the connoisseur and those wishing to liven up their homes with period furniture, Antiquity has returned to the city with a fine and aesthetic collection of replicas of carved period furniture in mahogany.
The exquisite collection which is on display at Road No.13, behind White House, Banjara Hills (Ph.9885421751) covers a gamut of styles spanning the French Regency, Chippendale, Victorian and Oriental and comes across as a rich blend of East and the West apart from encompassing traditional and contemporary.
Ranging from Rs.5,000 to Rs.50,000, the exhibition-cum-sale brought here by Baseera Ahmed has an array of consoles, Gothic and Louis XV tables, English Georgian gilt wood chaise lounges, Gossip benches and Salon sofas. One can also pick up from aesthetic design finishes of Gondola, King George, Jacob, Philadelphia, Chippendale, English-French Hepplewhite and Peter chairs.
Preserving the grace and splendour of the past, each piece is carefully designed, moulding itself into modern day living, the expo and sale organisers say. One is riveted by the quality of craftsmanship of each piece . The aesthetics of the designs have been consciously preserved even in upholstery, polish and grain of wood.
Antiquity describes itself as a pioneer of carved period furniture in the city. Several new possibilities of the use of mahogany which is equally strong as teak or Rose wood have been explored and the superior, softer, smoother mahogany lends itself to ‘Batali’, the ancient Bengali art of chisel work, Baseera Ahmed informs.
