Centre sanctions 15 ’Solar Cities’

In an attempt to promote renewable energy usage across the country, the government has sanctioned a plan to develop 15 cities, including Agra, Nagpur and Chandigarh as ’Solar Cities’.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing ’Development of Solar Cities’ aimed at reducing at least 10 per cent of the projected demand of conventional energy through renewable energy installations. During the XIth Plan (2007-12), MNRE has proposed to develop 60 cities as ’Solar Cities’.

“Fifteen cities --- Agra, Nagpur and Chandigarh, have been sanctioned for development (as ’solar cities’),” MNRE Secretary Deepak Gupta told reporters here.

Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah had earlier said that the centre would provide financial support up to Rs 50 lakh for each city to the respective state governments for preparation of master plan, awareness generation and capacity building activities. - PTI

Logistics park

Sri City said it has launched a 500 acre logistics and warehousing park in Andhra Pradesh with an initial investment of Rs 50 crore.

The park is expected to accommodate about 20 large logistics companies and generate employment for more than 3,000 people in the industry.

“Initially we had invested Rs 50 crore on developing basic infrastructure for the park and as per the demand we may increase the investment,” Sri City President Ramesh Subramaniam said.

The park would form an exclusive zone in the 5,000 acre Sri City multi-product SEZ.

“The Sri City Logistics and Warehousing Park comes at the right time when the Rs 4,70,000 crore logistics business in India is set to boom,” Subramaniam said.

He also said that A S Cargo has entered into an agreement with Sri City as a co-developer to build warehousing facilities in over 50 acres of land out of 500 acres, with an investment of Rs 100 crore. - PTI
