Ban on private trade of sand evokes mixed reaction
The Kerala High Court order banning the sale of sand by private agencies in Ernakulam district has evoked a mixed reaction. A Division Bench of the court, on Monday, ordered that sand collected from riverbeds in the district should be distributed only through Kalavaras, the fair price outlets for sand and other construction material opened by the State government.
The Bench, comprising Chief Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice Kurian Joseph, directed that private trade of sand be disallowed. The judges directed the government to take steps to open more Kalavaras in the district.
People in the construction sector, already reeling under the impact of the tipper lorry strike, say the unavailability of sand has stopped work on many building sites.
The environmental activists want an audit of every sand- mining ghat to ensure ecological balance.
