New on the rack

Structure of the book: The book contains two parts — Precalculus Mathematics and Calculus, Vectors and Probability — which can be read more or less independently.

Introduction: Each chapter has a brief introduction indicating the scope of the topic discussed, the area covered and also a line about how it fares in the JEE — whether the topic has a potential for `sure shot' questions, or whether it rarely appears in the examinations.

Main Problem: The introduction is followed by a main problem, which is cast in the form, which requires a numerical answer. A large number of problems have been taken from the JEE question papers, occasionally with minor modifications/ a few problems have been taken from the regional Mathematics Olympiads (RMO) and the International Mathematics Olympiads (IMO).

Hints: A student should try to solve the problems without hints. But hints, sometimes two or three, are provided depending on the complexity of the problem.

Solutions: The problem is discussed in its various aspects. Along this learning process, the solution is arrived at.

Comments: A large number of comments follow the solution. These comments sometimes arise naturally from the problem. Many comments give insights to various related concepts. Helpful tips aimed at sharpening the thinking ability and increasing the mathematical maturity of the student are also provided.

Exercises: The comments are followed by a large number of exercises, the answers to which are provided at the end of the corresponding part.
