Sometimes writing is all about bright ideas and getting the technicalities right. Two books, My Book Of Creative Writing and Writing Winning Reports And Essays seeks to develop the latent creative spark by teaching the basics of good writing and unlike most books making such claims, do keep their promise. My Book Of Creative Writing by Deepa Aggarwal is a user-friendly guide to the nuances of creative writing, which the age-old saying "writers are born and not made". It describes in clear terms the distinction between writing fiction and non-fiction and their importance. A series of exercises on writing, it begins well with the simple and effective "word chain" game, which begins with the first word that comes to the reader's mind. It also deals with the essential questions "Where, When, Who, How And Why?" and "Beginning, Ending And What Goes In Between!" The chapter on "Must Reads For Writers" is a book list for aspiring writers, selected for style and not necessarily the content, but is helpful.
Writing Winning Reports And Essays is also about writing better but concentrates more on the technicalities than creativity. Attractively presented, it is not another textbook essay writing. It is packed with important pointers on how to write a report, collect and use reference material, and frame different types of information on subjects as diverse as geography, history and science. An interesting and important chapter is the one that discusses writing about oneself. It should stand one in good stead when writing out those pesky personal assessments when applying to universities abroad. A simple and easy to follow book, it has sample essays and reports too.
