Have a good breakfast, have a good day!

The first meal of the day is important. If you skip it, then you are sure to feel lethargic through the day.

Did you know that there is a direct relationship between eating breakfast and your cognitive abilities and academic performance? No breakfast causes a short attention span, a lack of alertness and a longer reaction time.

Since the brain derives its energy only from glucose, an interruption in the supply can lead to lethargy, weakness, fatigue and exhaustion. Breakfast means a "break" from "fasting" and you feed your body after a gap of 10 to12 hours. This ensures that the blood glucose levels are maintained till the next meal.

What's the best?

Just tell your mom that a simple breakfast of cereal, pulse and fruit often provides good amounts of carbohydrates, protein, minerals like calcium and iron and vitamins. Traditional breakfasts like idli, dosa, kichdi, roti along with fruit are good, because they are a healthy balance of these nutrients. Proteins keep our hunger satisfied longer, so include nuts and dairy products too. If you are a non-breakfast eater, what's your excuse? Whatever it may be, it's no valid reason!!

"No time?" Skipping breakfast is probably common among today's children, because parents have to rush to work and strict regimen at school keeps them on their toes. Obviously, breakfast is not a priority. But missing out on this may hinder your growth, because your body may use up its stores for meeting energy requirements.

"Not hungry?" This might be a result of eating late in the evening. As a result, when you go to bed, your body is still busy digesting. Digestion goes into a slower gear during sleep and there is still food in the stomach by morning. To avoid this feeling, plan your night meal a little early. Exercising in the morning may also help.

How about brunch?

"Don't like breakfast foods?" You need not necessarily eat traditional breakfast foods. Any healthy and safe food is fine.

"Don't like eating breakfast?" It is in your best interest to eat breakfast. It may not be possible to make up for this loss through the day.The practice of having an early brunch is common among some South Indian families. A light or a substantial meal in the morning, is much better than starving till noon.

If you have a substantial meal in the morning have a snack in the afternoon. Even this is acceptable as long as you stick to regular food habits.

But, remember to have your first meal of the day to break the nocturnal fast.
