July 1: Chinese President, Hu Jintao, swears in Hong Kong’s chief executive Donald Tsang and his Cabinet for a new five-year term as the city embarks upon its second decade under Beijing’s rule.

July 2: Dr. Mohammed Haneef, an Indian national, is detained at the Brisbane airport, Australia in connection with the botched “terror plot” in Britain. His cousin Sabeel Ahmed, also a doctor, is detained in Liverpool for his role in the Glasgow terror attack.

July 3: Sixteen persons are killed following clashes between students of the Lal Masjid Jamia Hafsa complex and Pakistan Rangers in Aabpara, Islamabad.

July 4: The BBC journalist Alan Johnston is freed after a 114-day ordeal in Gaza following seizure by members of the Dugmush clan.

July 6: The Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s plane is “fired on” soon after take-off from Rawalpindi.

July 7: Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China, the Colosseum in Rome, pink ruins of Petra in Jordan, the Statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru and the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico are the ‘new’ Seven Wonders of the World.

July 8: The Moitree Express, the first Indian passenger train from Kolkata reaches Bangladesh on a trial run.

Boeing’s new “green” passenger jet, the 787 Dreamliner makes its first appearance at the aircraft maker’s plant at Everett near Seattle in the U.S.

July 10: Abdul Rashid Ghazi, the Islamist cleric and 73 suspected militants are killed in “Operation Silence” during which security forces storm the Lal Masjid-Jamia Hafsa Complex in Islamabad, after a week-long standoff.

July 14: The Australian police charge Indian doctor Mohammad Haneef with “providing support to a terrorist group” in connection with the U.K. “terror plots”.

Russia suspends participation in the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty.

July 15: North Korea shuts down its nuclear complex at Yongbyon.

July 16: Mohammad Haneef is granted bail by an Australian court but his work visa is cancelled and a new detention order is issued by the Immigration Minister.

The former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, is arrested on extortion charges at her residence and sent to jail.

The British Government expels four Russian diplomats over Moscow’s refusal to extradite Andrei Lugovoi, the main accused in the Alexander Litvinenko murder case.

July 17: At least 186 persons on board an Airbus A320 plane are killed after it careens off the runway and slams into a building at the Congonhas airport in Brazil after landing in rain.

July 18: Australia declares Mohammed Haneef “a terror prisoner” and lodges him in a solitary cell, at Wolston Prison in Queensland.

July 19: Russia expels four British diplomats.

Taliban militants abduct 23 South Korean Christian aid workers while travelling on a bus down the Kabul-Kandahar Highway in Afghanistan.

July 20: The Pakistan Supreme Court reinstates Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary throwing out the March 9 Presidential reference against him as “illegal.”

The 16-month probe into the cash-for-peerages row in the U.K. collapses.

July 21: Pakistan’s Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary resumes office.

Harry Potter and the Death Hallows, the seventh and last volume in a decade-long saga goes on sale worldwide.

July 22: Turkish people cast votes in general elections.

The Indo-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry is launched in Dhaka.

July 23: Turkey’s Justice and Development Party led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeps the polls.

July 24: Libya frees six foreign medics convicted of infecting hundreds of children with HIV.

July 25: Taliban rebels in Afghanistan kill one of 23 South Koreans being held hostage seeking the release of eight fighters.

July 27: Mohammed Haneef held by Australian police on terrorism-related charges since July 2 is released.

July 28: Freed Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef leaves Australia.

The Scouts movement completes 100 years.

July 29: The Opposition Democratic Party of Japan secures an absolute majority in the Upper House elections.

July 30: The Bangladesh High Court grants bail to the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and halts all proceedings in an extortion case.

Taliban militants shoot to death a second South Korean hostage after the deadline for the Afghan Government expires.

July 31: P. Sainath, Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu, Filipino nationalist Jovito R. Salonga, Rev. Kim Sun-tae of South Korea are among seven persons chosen for the 2007 Ramon Magsaysay Award.

British troops leave Northern Ireland after a 38-year stay as part of “Operation Banner”.

Australian media baron Rupert Murdoch acquires Dow Jones for $5 billion.
