Ready to watch fish?

Homeowners and designers are integrating aquariums into homes like never before and with good reason.

Caringly collected and properly maintained, an aquarium breathes life into a room and provides a connection to nature within the home. Thanks to the trend of making our home a place to unwind, customized aquarium installations are soaring in popularity. Replete with splendid fishes, exotic corals and flourishing aquatic plants, this beautiful design element provides a soothing, welcome respite from our busy lives.

Before committing to a new aquarium, one should be armed with all the necessary information. Samuel Solomon, Proprietor, Amazon Aquarium, Anna Nagar says, “The modern aquarium has come of age, and when approached as a design element or focal point, a fish tank is an impressive addition to any interior.” Adding that everything new remains good only when maintained well, he insists, “A beautiful thing can soon become an eyesore if not properly planned and maintained.”

Placement and lighting, whether functional or aesthetic are important, and so is filtration and life support to keep the tank clean. Decorative elements and long-term care are significant issues to consider while planning an aquarium. “It pays to spend time determining the objective of the aquarium and how best to balance the objectives with maintenance and other compulsory aspects of aquarium ownership,” he adds.

Always favorites, the gold fish are species that could win hands down to being the most preferred pet in an aquarium. “But so is the discus and the shark,” says S Karthekiyan, Proprietor, The United India Aquarium at Velachery, which houses exotic species of butterflies, clowns and anemones too. “We sell both ordinary and imported fish tanks and packages range between Rs 4,500 and Rs.45, 000.” If you love marine ornamental fish, The Dolphin Aquarium at Mylapore is one place you should not miss. “Priced at Rs150 and above, Feng shui fish are soaring in popularity,” says V Ashok Kumar, “but Arwona and flowerhorn are our specialty species.”

Aquariums are an integrated fixture and it can be quite expensive to rip out or modify once put in place. So when it’s time to splurge on the ‘exotic fish tank idea’, make sure that the conditions are right, then, sit back and savor those remarkable under water scenes!
