In full swing!

The swing is swaying hearts like never before.

Our lives are hectic and we lose ourselves to urban chaos, and the thought of

lazing about is so distant. A swing at home seems the only answer to a relaxed disposition for many frenzied workaholics. Mrs Ramanan, a housewife, had purchased an ornate swing recently to go with her tastefully decorated home. “Swings are a vital element of ethnic décor,” she smiles, adding, “and placing cushions with traditional upholstery enhances its conventional appearance.”

Swings come in different sizes and prices to match and one can either buy an exquisite piece from a showroom or choose to carve their dream swing from scratch. The Victoria Technical Institute (VTI) on Mount Road houses a whole range of intricately carved wooden swings. These elaborate pieces stand testimony to the superior craftsmanship involved in making swings. AD Muthukumaraswamy, Manager – Admin, VTI announces proudly, “Every work here is a statement of quality and we have a grand variety of pieces ranging from the simple backless swings to the more elaborate ones that come complete with rooftops and pillars.” The swings, he added, were brought in from Mysore mostly. VTI uses only seasoned rosewood for their distinctive collection of swings and prices vary between one lakh and 4.5 lakhs.

Indika Creations at Adyar also flaunts a much sought after collection of

wooden swings. Suresh Narayan, Indika Creations reminisces that ‘oonjals’

have played an important role in our society from time immemorial. “Till date,

the swing is associated with auspicious occasions especially weddings,” he says. Speaking on the recent trends, Suresh adds, “The traditional swing has been

innovated upon and now we have ‘oonjals’ with back rests and swings that can

double-up as benches.” While the price of a swing will vary from Rs 5,000 to

Rs 1, 50,000 depending on the rarity of the wood, the intricacy of the design

also plays a major sway! Sway away with swings from Indika Creations at

98409 94939 and VTI at 2852 3141
