Dance Trance!

It seems to be the time to disco for every teenager in Chennai! What does hold teenagers in a trance when in comes to dancing?

With dance shows scorching the screen on every channel, the excitement seems to catch up off screen as well. “Every time I hear a good song, my feet tap to the celebration of music,” smiles B Suresh, a Management student. Though he performs western dance regularly at college, he had never undergone any specific training. “Dance is more than my passion, it comes naturally to me, so I have never been to any classes,” Suresh confirms.

For seventeen-year old Nita R, it’s a different story. Nita had initially joined hip-hop classes as her mother wanted her to keep fit. She says, “I never thought I could dance till I joined the dance class, and now it’s turned from being just a workout to an enjoyable entertainment as well!”

Be it salsa, hip hop or our very own bharatnatyam, teens demand a professional atmosphere for learning. As a result, several dance schools have mushroomed across the city. Donavin, a Viscom student had recently joined a salsa class and he says, “I love all forms of dance but especially enjoy salsa for its elegance. Salsa’s simple movements allow the dancer move with such poise that it looks like I literally float on the floor.”

While these youngsters sway to western tunes, there are many who stay faithful to their Indian roots. For Lakshmi Dhanraj, bharatnatyam is more than a dance form. “There’s nothing more divine when the music, the lyrics, the nrita and the bhava merge with each other, and the experience felt is perfect bliss!”
