With work pressure breathing down their neck, the city’s corporate crowd is sweating it out to keep themselves fit.

With odd hours of work and surmounting pressures at workplace, working out to stay fit has become a necessity rather than an option for many. Senthil Kumar M, a software engineer at HCL technologies opines that exercising everyday is mandatory to ward off the evils of a sedentary lifestyle. He says, “Being an IT professional, we spend minimum 9 hours per day in front of computer. As a result we end up with blotched eyes, strained neck and an excruciating back ache almost every other day.” He believes that a regular physical activity is the panacea for all such ills. “I try to spend at least 45 minutes everyday day exercising in my office gym. Apart from this, our office has also arranged a yoga session. At the end of an exhausting day, it is the bliss of yoga
that helps us keep our mind fresh and relaxed.”
Lot of corporate organisations have plunged into the fitness arena, with increasing awareness among professionals to keep fit. The clients of Fitness One are proof enough, ‘CTS, Saint Gobain, Britannia, Citibanks… the list goes endless’. Enlightening further on his area of expertise, Vivek Anand, M.D, Fitness One says, “There are 3 dimensions to consider, one is the hardware, the physical equipments in the gym, second, the trainer and the third and the most important factor, achieving results. Without the third dimension, your equipment may well become a costly piece of furniture or even a clothes hanger! And it is here we step in.” He informs, “We at fitness one seek to provide comprehensive solutions to the corporate client through our FPO ( Fitness Process Outsourcing) program, wherein we customise the fitness regime as per the goals of the customer. Now, we have also launched ‘fitness at home’, through which a working individual can workout at his own place with professional guidance.”
O2, a leading fitness studio in the city has come up with a unique ‘Functional Training Program’ for the health conscious executives. “In this program, we train our customers according to the nature of their work,” Says Earnest Vijay, Fitness Director, O2. “Initially, a complete evaluation of the customer is done and then we go on with an holistic approach, whether to strengthen the muscle or to provide relaxation and so on. From a dietician, a yoga practitioner to a dance therapist, we have all kinds of scientifically proven therapies here,” he concludes. Jeffery Vardon, Aerobics Director at O2 compliments the work of his friend Vijay, “Initially, it has been only a trial and error method in the workouts but now with physiotherapists in place, we are clear with body mechanics and can now go in safely for scientifically proven therapies.” He then speaks with infectious enthusiasm on his recent venture, “We are now launching ‘Zoomba’ that would help work on the muscles in the mid region.” Dance exercise is definitely a fun way to lose those extra pounds.
Though lot of young professionals love the push-ups, there are still many who cherish the charms of good old yoga. On prioritising fitness, Dr. Asana Andiappan of Asana Andiaapan Yoga Research says, “It is important to realise that a well-toned body is an important part of good health. Daily practice of Yoga may increase your life span by ten years very easily. Yet most of us feel that we have no time for yoga. It is in our hands to make the choice on where to invest our time. When you make your health a priority, you will make time!” Dr. M. P. Ramesh of Ajna Yoga and Naturopathy Clinic strikes a similar note, “Practising yoga is a healthier way of living”. He says, “It brings harmony between the physical and the mental level. Yoga makes a person agile and also gets rid off of all stress related issues as a true yogi masters his anxieties.”
Whatever be the means, executives have definitely realised fitness is more than a trend. It is salvation time for the physical self!
