Growning Green Glory!

WHEN did we last step into a home surrounded by lush greenery or a sprawling garden laced in green? When did we last have the luxury of savoring morning coffee in our own little lawn? Well the answers are far too obvious. Those were the days of yore. Gone are those days and gone are the lush green lung spaces. Urbanization has arrived and how!

But there’s still hope for die-hard nature lovers. In an urban landscape which is growing vertically, terrace gardens are good options. But then the luxury of having a terrace lawn calls for a lot of planning and meticulous execution.

Bhaskar, an eminent designer says “Ensuring a proper drainage system is the first pre-requisite. Then appropriate water proofing should be done to avoid seeping of water into the building.

Design elements like sit outs, plant features and brickworks come into play subsequently. Planting comes in as the last step which involves in-depth planning.” Talking about the right plants, Suresh Iyer of Polygon Industries says “Choice of plants depends entirely on their placement.

Plants are generally placed in shady, semi-shady and open areas. Basing on these, appropriate plants need to be picked.” He quickly adds “Anything that thrives on ground can be bred in a terrace. But the soil has to be replaced annually.”

The normal time frame to shape a terrace garden is anything between 15 days and a month. Enlightening further, Gowri Shankar, a renowned designer who has worked on a lot of AP government projects and chief of Hyper Cube Design Centre says “Seepage of water is the biggest problem that beseeches the process of roof gardening. Recently I have innovated a technique that avoids low-roofing and mud-filling thereby eradicating seepage. Terrace lawns can be done on any space irrespective of size.

My recent project for a home in Vidya Nagar is a perfect example. In a meager area of just about 200.sq.ft, we managed to create a fantastic lawn replete with seasonal creepers, pre-casted fiber glass fountain and other works.”

Talking about the cost factor, he says that a good terrace lawn can be created by spending as low as Rs.20,000/- and the upper limit is literally skywards.
