The word “bazaar” would immediately conjure up images of crowded streets and hawking vendors. Pondy Bazaar is one such place, but in spite of the packed streets, it still manages to allure many into its folds. Pondy Bazaar is a very important hub for retail and caters to all profiles of customers ranging from the elite to the other extreme end. There is a constant battle for the customers with the high profile stores vying with the makeshift pavement businesses.
The place has numerous eat outs ranging from the very posh restaurants to the local outlets to cater to the wide cross section of crowd which comes here daily. Hotel Saravana Bhavan, the worldwide chain of south Indian restaurants has its branch here apart from outlets such as Hot Chips, Murugan Idli Kadai, Adyar Ananda Bhavan, Pelita Nasi Kandar and Kai Yendi Bhavan. Some outlets have been in existence for so long that they have now become a part of the landscape. Shri Balaajee Bhavan (formerly known as Shantha Bhavan) and Geetha Café are examples of such restaurants which have been providing delicious food since the 80’s. The latest addition to this chain of joints is the Ratna Café which is famous for its idli-sambar.
Pondy Bazaar has one of the biggest commercial stores of Chennai, Saravana Stores, which has everything ranging from small items to expensive gold and diamond jewellery. The Rathna Stores has their branch here which sprawls over five floors and is famous for their low priced utensils. Rathna Fan House (which is incidentally not a part of Rathna Stores) stocks all types of electrical goods such as fans, refrigerators and other white goods. Posh hotels such as GRT Grand Days and Residency Towers are found towards one end of Pondy Bazaar Road.
But it’s the pavement shops which steal the show. Whether it is buckets or bangles to any small yet necessary household item can be found here at low prices and you can get the joy of bargaining which you can’t indulge in other bigger stores. With a balanced mix of large outlets and smaller ones, Pondy Bazaar has the distinction of being Chennai’s busiest retail hubs ever.
