Once you step inside ‘The Ark’ in Adyar, you can’t help getting a nostalgic feeling about it. It is so very reminiscent of the biblical Noah’s Ark. Guinea pigs, dogs, mice, geese, horse, rabbits, cats and more throng the place at every corner, but this is no boat! It is the 24 hours veterinary clinic in Adyar run by Dr. Arvind Kumar. His well-equipped clinic has an X-ray machine, ECG, and an efficient operating theatre! ‘The Ark’ also has a versatile retail outlet for the pets. “From dog food, collars to veterinary medicines, we have it all here,” says Arvind. “We give you simple yet efficient choice of products, as we have at least one kind of everything a pet owner would want,” he adds.
Ramraj Agencies is another established outlet in the field of pet care. Started way back in 1978, their retail outlet ‘Pet Choice’ sells a whole range of pet foods, pet accessories and pet medicines. Enlightening on the price range of the pet foods, Mr. Balagopal says, “We have pet foods starting at Rs. 350 going up to Rs. 3000 here, depending upon the quality and the quantity.” From the imported Royal Canine, Propett, Eukanuva, and Bento kronen to our Indian Pedigree you name it and you’ll find it here. “We also have a range of products to meet every canine need, vibrant collars, leashes, beds, balls, bathing gloves, coat conditioners, dandruff shampoos, tick soaps apart from the normal soaps and shampoos,” he informs. Pet cosmetics are definitely on the rise!
But getting the right shampoo is not sufficient to keep your pet happy. When queried on pet care, Mr. Suresh Chandra, anavid pet lover has this to say, “The first and foremost suggestion I would like to forward to my fellow pet lovers is to read the characteristics of the pet you intend to keep. Environment and food habits differ from one pet to another pet. General information may not be sufficient. The other most important factor is the time. Initially every body in the household, especially children, spend most of their time with their pets. At the later stages, thanks to their erratic tuition timings, they wander away from the pets and suddenly the pet becomes a nuisance! Assured time to spare is the key here.” Suresh has bred a wide range of dogs like Beagles, Miniature Pinschers, Chihuahuas and Fox Terriers. Apart from these canine friends (which numbers over thirty) he has a variety of birds. “My ambition now is to start a web site exclusively for the buyers. Since I have lost a lot of time and money I wouldn’t like that to happen to others,” he adds pensively.
If fishes are your first love, Amazon Aquarium is one place you’ll have to visit. It is owned by Mr. Samuel Solomon whose achievements include breeding exotic fishes, setting up natural biotope tanks and erecting life size aquariums and ponds. He has also bred the flower horn (Chinese feng shui fish) for the first time in India. Apart from interesting fishes, you’ll get almost everything that your aquarium needs, here. Speaking on the important aspects of an aquarium, Samuel informs, “The filtration system is the heart of the aquarium. A good range of them is available here from Rs. 650 to Rs.35000. Amazon Aquarium even offers warranty and after sales service for a select range of filters.” You also get a good range of feed to keep your fish healthy.
Exotic birds and dogs find a home at Classic Pets, T.Nagar. Mr. Zaheer of Classic Pets says, “We have around 138 different breeds here. We also ensure that the customer gets to feed their pets the correct food. We even have exclusive tooth brush and toothpaste for your dog!” he adds with glee.
