Redefining Entertainment

The word “innovation” takes a totally different meaning when it comes to Mr. Abirami Ramanathan. The city’s many ‘firsts’ were his brain child. The managing director of Abirami Mega Mall has walked the path less travelled and the difference is for all to see.

Out of the box thinking is habitual for Mr. Abirami Ramanathan. Converting the Abirami Group of theatres into a Family Entertainment Centre (FEC) on par with international standards has reaped rich harvests. “I was living in Malaysia sometime back and there all the stand alone theatres got converted to malls. So, that is how Abirami Mega Mall came into being,” says Mr. Ramanathan. The Abirami Mega Mall was the first of its kind not only in Chennai but also in the entire South India.

The Abirami Mega Mall has the distinction of giving Chennai its many “firsts”. The first DTS (Digital Theatre Sound) system and computer ticketing in India was initiated by Abirami theatres. Whether it is bringing snow to Chennai, giving the city its very first roof top car parking or creating a fantasy world for kids, Abirami Mega Mall has been the first mall in the city to do so. “We have created the very first 5 star theatre of India- Swarna Sakthi Abirami. No where else would you find 100% percent reclining chairs and butler on call. The ambience would transport you to an Egyptian palace 2000 years ago,” claims Mr. Ramanathan.

So, what keeps the crowd coming back to Abirami Mega Mall? Says Mr Ramanathan, “Our economic pricing keeps the ‘regulars’ coming back. Moreover, we go by what the public wants.” Abirami Mega Mall stands for complete entertainment. The Teen’s World and Kissing Cars are novel attractions which provide a totally new experience. The Snow World makes 35 tonnes of snow with 5 tonnes of crystallized mineral water at -6 degrees. “The Snow World is considered the best in the country. The reason why parents like their children to play here is because it is economical and the safety measures takes are top notch,” feels Mr. Ramanathan.

But is the competition with other malls endangering Abirami Mega Mall? “Not really. Chennai has a population (including floating population) touching crores and any amount of malls is not enough for such a huge population. So no mall can compete with another mall,” quips Mr. Ramanathan.

Adept at playing a multitude of roles, Mr Ramanathan has held many prestigious positions such as the District Governor of Rotary District 3230, Executive Member of Film Federation of India, President of Chennai City Films Exhibitor’s Association and President of Madras Film Society. Mr. Ramanathan has produced many television serials and some of them include ‘Mayavi Marichan’, ‘Master Mayavi’, ‘Devadai’, ‘Deiva Darisanam’ and ‘Namma Ooru’.

What does the future hold for Abirami Mega Mall? “We like to spring surprises and don’t believe in letting everything out in the open,” says Mr. Ramanathan. With such a vibrant and versatile personality at its helm, it is little wonder that Abirami Mega Mall is among the top malls in the country.
