Sweet tidings!
|
Surprisingly, their sole ambition in life is to ensure that every one right from six to sixty can devour the ‘sweet’ pleasures of life. Meet Mr. K.T. Srinivasa Raja and Mr. K.T. Venkatesan - the driving force behind Adyar Ananda Bhavan, the city’s oldest and largest chain of sweet shops.

The story behind Adyar Ananda Bhavan is not an unusual one. Late Mr. K.S. Thirupathi Raja started the dice rolling in Rajapalayam when he opened Guru Sweets. What started as a small, family owned sweet shop has now developed into a huge enterprise satisfying the palate of millions!
“In other parts of the State, traditional sweets were very popular. But not much of it was in the city,” quips Mr. Srinivasa Raja. The quest to provide the city dwellers the taste of traditional sweets, motivated them to start Adyar Ananda Bhavan. Three decades ago, the very first outlet opened its shutters to the city marking the beginning of a sweet tradition. A giant leap from being a small, obscure outlet selling sweets and chaats to a national chain of sweet shop and restaurant - the growth has been exceptional.
Think sweets and Adyar Ananda Bhavan flashes across your mind instantaneously! “Our modus operandi is to satisfy our customers. Everything we do is to make our customers happy,” they reveal. The changes introduced in the outlets bear testimony to the seriousness with which they comply with the customer’s wishes. Truly, the customer is king here. “The health food specialty restaurant at their recently opened outlet at Tambaram was to cater to the needs of the steadily growing health conscious community,” confess both the managing partners.
Why is Adyar Ananda Bhavan so very popular? “Our dedication to quality and our commitment to giving our customer’s nothing but the very best has put us ahead,” they reflect. “We are the only enterprise in Chennai to have a unique boiler which keeps the oil (for the snacks) at a constant temperature all the time,” they say proudly. The fact that their sweets contain moderate sweetness depicts their concern for their customers - indulgence without harm. Another factor, which works towards their favour, is the service. Says Mr. Srinivasa Raja, “Our top notch service is our pride. No matter how good a product is, without good service, it is a failure.” The trial method (read as customer acceptance) is how they determine which sweets stay and which are taken off the shelf. Strong marketing and promotion strategies are yet another huge onus on the enterprise.
Looking into the future, what’s the forecast for Adyar Ananda Bhavan? Says Mr. Srinivasa Raja, “We already have 41 branches across the country and are looking to expand our chain of stores to cross the magical 50 mark.” Would we get to see an outlet in foreign soil? “Right now, it is opening more outlets in India. Going international would come later,” they say. Sweet intention, isn’t it?
