All that glitters ain’t gold!

A new breed of jewel crazy teens that have sprung up all over Chennai, are looking down their noses at gold, silver and anything else remotely precious. Their new watchword: junk jewelry. Anirudh Mehta, a teenager who is seldom seen without his African tribal necklace, enlightened me on his rather curious tastes,” I bought this piece, because it really complemented my new hairdo”, he says, gesturing towards his gelled spikes. “It completes my new look for college. When you wear this kind of stuff, you need loads of attitude to pull it off, ” he adds. Deviating from the original purpose of its inception, that of providing an inexpensive alternative, to its real and exorbitantly priced counterpart, junk jewellery now inspires costly splurge attacks amongst teens. Shilpa Sagili, a hard-core fake jewellery enthusiast, gushes, “I love the freedom I get with buying junk jewellery. I’m free to choose colours that take off well on me and can get rid of them the moment they’re not in vogue. I can also buy as many pieces as I want and match them together as a completely colour-coded set. Besides, even boys these days are giving us a run for our money!” Tina Ram, yet another costume jewellery aficionado, showed me the string of fake silver rings adorning her ear lobes, “The reason we wear jewellery is to beautify ourselves, and if we can do that in a way not hard on our wallets, then why look any further?” A few teens did vote against fake jewellery, saying it could never equal the aesthetic essence of real gold or silver. The vast majority however, seemed to prefer junk to the real stuff!
