Entertainment and Beyond!

Udeep B Chief Executive Officer, Mayajaal Entertainment Limited Annual turnover: 15 crores

With businesses across five diverse verticals ranging from movies and retail to sports, food and hospitality, Mayajaal has pulled it off quite well. In a freewheeling interview with Retail Plus, Udeep B, CEO, Mayajaal entertainment Ltd enlightens us on the magic behind Mayajaal’s success.

Udeep explains the philosophy behind the Mayajaal concept saying, “At Mayajaal, we are here to create a family-themed entertainment. From 6 – 60, we seek to cater to the family as a whole. Though people basically relate it to movies, we seek to provide a complete entertainment to the moviegoer. There is a gaming console, spa, shopping mall, sports club and now with the resort, he can even spend his weekends here.”

On Mayajaal’s eventful journey, he reminisces, “In 2001, Mayajaal started off as a 6-screen theatre with a gaming console in its premises. Right then, it was a little ahead of its time, but distance was a major issue. Then by 2003, the ECR stretch evolved and with the IT highway and apartments mobbing this stretch, it soon became an entertainment hub. In 2003, we had a whopping 30-40 % annual growth and the sports village was launched right then.” From then on there was no looking back, “In the financial year of 2004-2005, we came up with an on-shore resort and the next year saw a shopping mall blooming up” he informs.

Udeep feels that quality is their USP, saying, “Our company has a strong corporate outlook on everything. We believe that quality and customer service are foremost in our business, so there is no compromise on that. Every little detail is looked into - for example the AC is never switched off here and we have 100 % power backup. Further, I think no other organisation can boast of such a huge car park - ours is a 1090 car slot. We make sure our customers never forget the quality of experience we provide here.” He further adds, “Be it a couple, family or a 10,000-strong employee outing, everyone will find space here. Since the crowd here is not too intrusive, celebrities too love to spend time here.”

Speaking on how Mayajaal has redefined entertainment in the city, he says, “On the movie front, we give a complete content mix. Apart from the regular Tamil movies, we also feature various regional languages and English films. There will be at least 3 to 4 new releases every week. And in games, we have around 18 games from tennis, golf, squash…you name it you have it here. We even have a go-karting track for those looking out for an adventure.”

Talking about future plans, he says, “We have definite plans to venture to a couple of other cities apart from Chennai, which include Pondicherry, Coimbatore, Trichy and may be even Hosur. In 2008, another four theatres will be launched here in Chennai and a food court is likely to be added on. We also have plans of roping in a hypermarket soon.” Thanks to his strong business acumen, this young CEO is all set to win the success sweepstakes! .
